When I saw that post about weeaboos, I felt like I had to get this out already.

For all you non-Japanese people (unless you were adopted by a Japanese family) going by a Japanese name online and/or in real life, stop it.

Know that bearing a Japanese name isn’t our choice. It’s not just a name you can pick out and think, “hey the meaning is interesting” “it sounds cute” so that you can use it. This has pissed me off to no end. Why can you use it, but when I have no choice, I’m affected by blatant ignorance?

I speak as a part Japanese who was made fun of as a child for my last name.

It took me such a long time to love myself as a whole, I hated being Filipino, I hated being Japanese. We don’t have it perfect. Other children made fun of my last name because it was Japanese. They said it sounded weird and I felt so left out when I was with the other kids.

I don’t care if you know the meaning behind the name, I don’t care if it’s because you need an online name, I don’t care if you can speak Japanese and use it around Japanese people, I don’t care at all.

• You have no right to adopt a name people have been made fun of for, that people have been disrespected and humiliated for.
  
• You have no right to adopt a name that made people hate themselves.

You cannot just pick something that you like out of ‘the whole package’ and disregard our struggle.

That’s all I have to say. Don’t use a Japanese name if you have no right.
